Wintersong 08
Join us for one of two weekends of song, good food and excellent company with leading choral
teachers, Stephen Taberner and Rachel Hore. Stephen and Rachel are well known
throughout Australia for their inspiring teaching and unique blend of world music, original
choral compositions and funky arrangements. Both experienced and beginning singers are
welcome.

Each day will be structured around our singing sessions, with the opportunity for electives
or time just to relax. Karuna, our venue for the weekend, is a beautiful bush retreat in
the Blue Mountains, with a roaring fire, cute heated railway carriages and dormitary style
accommodation. There is a meditation room and bush tracks to roam.

This year we are delighted to present two wonderful Melbourne guest tutors: Firstly, Tania Bosak,
dazzling percussionist, physical theatre practioner and teacher of Ta-Ke-Ti-Na, a unique and
deep methodology of learning rhythm developed by Austrian percussionist Reinhard Flatischler.
Secondly, Carl Pannuzzo, one quarter of Totally Gourdgeous, an amazing
multi-instrumentalist, and one of Australia’s most soulful and beautiful singer/songwriters.

Biographies of the presenters
Rachel Hore is a singer, choral leader, songwriter, and percussionist who has
been performing and teaching throughout Australia and overseas for the
past 20 years. From Katoomba to Kalgoorlie, Burnie to Brisbane, Canberra to
Coffs and in between, Rachel is in demand as a mentor for choirs with her
warm and inspirational style of teaching.
Rachel began her singing career with the highly acclaimed vocal quartet
‘Arramaieda’, who became an important early influence on the now
flourishing acapella scene in Australia, with their original music and
arrangements.

Rachel has conducted large choral events such as the 500 voice Woodford
Festival ‘Fire Choir’ and the Melbourne Millennium Chorus. Recent teaching
events include ‘Singing in Tuscany’ and ‘Singing in Fiji’. Rachel runs music
workshops in remote communities for young aboriginal women and is
currently director of two choirs, Voiceworks and ROC.

Stephen Taberner is most deservedly notorious for his role as arch conspirator
behind the Spooky Men’s Chorale, a ruthless bunch or larrikins more
notorious than ever after back to back tours of the UK. He has also been
busy in the last few years as musical director of the Millennium Chorus, an
annual event at the Melbourne Concert Hall with a choir of 350. From his
new home in Melbourne, he also directs Yirriba (a community choir), Men
in Suits (a cheeky, tuneful and well groomed urban flash mob), and makes
periodic sorties all over Australasia to lead singing workshops and fine tune
local choirs.

He draws on a ridiculously eclectic set of influences in his musical work,
and pursues sundry other careers including quirky, funky and melancholic bass player/singer,
film composer, afficianado of world music, and actor/musician with the Ennio
Morricone Experience

Tania Bosak is a percussionist, vocalist, actor and Advanced TA KE TI NA
Rhythm Teacher. She has studied African dance, Indian Classical Dance and
various drumming styles in Senegal, the USA and Australia, including Haitian,
Brazilian and Cuban percussion. As a polyrhythm specialist, Tania’s workshops
invite participants into the world of simultaneous perception. Entering into
voice and rhythm from a deeply relaxed place becomes the foundation for
feeling and performing music from a centered and profound sense of self.
The rhythmic body and voice are key in unlocking the creative improviser
in us all! Tania is currently developing her one woman street drum - voice -
dance work with Yumi Umiumare and Bagryana Popov and will be launching
stage one of this work in 2008.

Carl Pannuzzo is an international performer and workshop facilitator most
known from Acapelicans, Totally Gourdgeous and as singing drummer for
Checkerboard Lounge, Carl brings a wealth of experience in improvisation, aural
training games, feeling music and the natural voice. His honesty, playfulness, and
‘mind over matter’ music finds individual resonance, expression and intention in
unorthodox, but extremely enjoyable and rewarding ways, determining that the
un-aimed arrow never misses!
